21 November 2021 Inviting all our parents, caregivers, friends; as well as all our Keas, Cubs and Scouts for a ‘lunch in the bush’ was a great idea. The photos show the activity around the river where we stopped for a sausage sizzle after making some small fires on the riverbank. Our adventure started in the carpark at the Mt Holdsworth camping area and proceeded through the top part of Donnelly Flat loop. This is an area where many have [Read More]

In a year difficult to plan with any certainty Keas focused on safety, enjoying learning while having fun. This included fire-lighting, using and putting out a campfire when finished. We went to the riverbank for a campfire and learned about dangers around rivers. Of course, we had to try the great Carterton swimming pool. We practised floating and swimming, as well as finding out why there are rules such as ‘No Running’. In November we went to Petone beach and [Read More]

Cubs spent some of a recent meeting working on their environmental badges. Part of our journey is learning how to care for people and our environment. At Carrington Park we picked up rubbish to keep it beautiful. Working in pairs we collected a good amount of trash, teaching more than just having fun, but being responsible humans! We are learning about self-sustainability and nature, as well as looking after our surroundings and the wildlife! We included a visit to the [Read More]

Jamboree On The Trail, or JOTT, is an annual day for the World Scout Movement to hike together: All Scouts, wherever they may be in the world, are invited to participate on the second Saturday of May. In their own way, everyone will be hiking the same direction: towards a better future through Scouting. Carterton Scout Group on Camp By Aidan King On the first day of school holidays, I went on a Scout camp at Mt Holdsworth. The first thing we had to do was to set up tents with our tent buddies. After the tents were up, me and the other Scouts did some whittling. In total there were 12 of us there and a dog. And then we had flag break and discussed what we were doing that night. We had [Read More]

ANZAC Day marching practice for Keas

Keas practiced marching with correct steps and following instructions, ready for this year’s ANZAC Day parade. With the rest of the Carterton Scouts divisions, they will be participating in the parade. Last year had special memories for many when COVID restrictions meant many of us lined our driveways early morning in the dark to observe the day as ‘normally’ as we were afforded. Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Kaiarahi received badges for their participation. One of our Keas tonight proudly showed [Read More]

Keas are our youngest group in Carterton Scouts. They like to get out and about, as well as having fun. Learning new skills and picking up knowledge helps them prepare better for Cubs and then Scouts as they grow older. In March Keas went to the riverbank just past the bridge going south from Carterton, a short rough patch of road to the Waiohine River. It was a great time of learning and a fun outdoor experience. Water safety vests [Read More]

A really busy start

Fundraising at Wings over Wairarapa in February had many members and parents of Carterton Scout Group cooking onions and sausages, adding sauces and fruit drinks. It was a great team effort, and profits will be spent on equipment. Next time we will be able to offer a bigger service area under shelter. Members and leaders have participated in camps, a mudslide, training camps and particularly for scouts (the older youth) a farm weekend challenge. For the younger children, there have [Read More]
